Podium temple on the Schönbühl hill

Ascent to the gods

A sizeable flight of steps lead from the theatre to the podium of a once magnificent temple complex. The podium temple was erected above earlier Gallo-Roman square temples and modelled on Mediterranean examples. It was built in AD 50-75, at the same time as the theatre on the opposite side.

The best-preserved temple ruin of Augusta Raurica gives an impression of the massive 'podium', a 3 m high masonry base, which once supported the temple encircled by 26 columns. The sizeable ashlar masonry foundations of the six front columns are still clearly visible.

The temple square and the grand-scale design of the outer portico encircling the entire complex gave the sanctuary a magnificent ambience, which would have commanded the attention of the theatre audience on the tiers of seats opposite.
