Hustle and bustle

To the east of the theatre you will find the remains of the centre of municipal administration and commerce, including a temple, an administration building and courthouse - the basilica - and a town hall - the curia. The large square, flanked on all sides by these public buildings and numerous shops, the so-called forum, was designed in the mid 1st century AD.

In Roman times:

Almost every Roman town had a forum including temples, a public square, a basilica and a town hall (curia) but only rarely were they distinguished to such an extent as Augusta Raurica was for its clarity in terms of its architectural axis and symmetry. The forum temple, surrounded on three sides by a portico, represented the sacred district, the area sacra. Facing the temple façade, the large public square, the area publica, was surfaced with sandstone. This square was also flanked by two-storey porticos containing a multitude of taverns and shops. Like a huge cross bar, the massive three-aisled basilica finished off the complex; added on to the back of it was the three-quarter round town hall, the curia.
