Basilica

A palace for the municipal administration

The basilica was located at right angles to the square on the northeastern side of the forum. The retaining walls are still visible today and bear witness to the original size of this building. Unlike a basilica of today, this three-aisled basilica did not serve as a house of god, but as a municipal administration and court building.

So far, very little is known about this monumental edifice that once stood on the forum of Augusta Raurica, as it has only been studied by means of a very small number of test trenches. Its symmetry, however, confirms that it was a three-aisled complex with several storeys, and it appears to have been a richly furnished representative town building. The foundations also show that an earlier basilica was demolished in order to make way for this more luxurious new building.
