Curia basement (with mosaic exhibition)

Curia

The basement underneath the curia is an outpost of the museum. Several mosaics are exhibited here and various workshops for schools are held here.

This is possibly where the treasure chamber of the town was situated in Roman times. It may also have housed a prison.

These stone images were, of course, not hung on walls, but once adorned the floors of dining rooms and baths etc.

Gladiator mosaic
The large dining hall of a luxurious townhouse was decorated with the well-known gladiator mosaic. The central medallion of the mosaic exhibited here depicts a water fountain surrounded by fish and a handled vessel (krater) shown in perspective.

Mosaics from the palazzo
At least ten rooms of a townhouse (palazzo), which have only been partially examined to date, were decorated with mosaic floors. Parts of the recovered remains can be seen in the curia basement.
