Experimental potter's kiln

Reproduction of ancient techniques by experimentation

Numerous potteries in Augusta Raurica produced crockery for the town and its surrounding settlements. One such kiln has been reconstructed for firing experiments at the foot of the curia. 'Experimental archaeology' is an interesting branch of research aimed at reproducing ancient techniques and processes.

An experimental potter's kiln at the foot of the curia outwardly has the appearance of a Roman construction. For durability reasons, modern materials were used in the construction of the kiln's interior. Many firing experiments have shown that it takes 8-10 hours of firing in order to reach the necessary temperatures of 1000-1200 °C in this kiln.
