Women's baths

Pleasure and hygiene

A complex of baths, no longer visible today, was located not far from the theatre in the 1st and 2nd centuries. Many hairpins and beads were found in the wastewater drain of the baths, which is why they are called women's baths.

In Roman times:

The women's baths - like the central baths and the Rhine baths - were more than the public swimming pools of today. The baths were where people liked to meet regularly, not just for bathing, but also to look after their personal hygiene in general and to swap the latest news. The baths for instance also housed hair pullers, doctors, masseurs and, of course, a variety of caterers. Sport and gymnastics in particular were pursued in special rooms and courtyards, similar to a modern fitness centre. Larger baths even had sweating rooms comparable with the Nordic saunas of today. The women's baths, excavated in 1937 and 1996, are no longer visible in the grounds today.
