Central baths

Bathing palace and fitness centre

A large 'bathing palace' was located southeast of the women's baths. The remains of the central baths are only visible today as a slight elevation in the area of the present-day steps leading down to the cloaca.

Similar to the Women's baths, almost nothing is visible today of the central baths. However, the site still remains unexamined in the ground. A small number of investigative trenches from 1942-1943 revealed a symmetrical ground plan. These excavations also unearthed parts of black and white mosaics (image above).

The only visible elements of the ancient central baths are the two portico walls (columned hall along the side of the road) at the access to the cloaca and an earlier basement.
