Cloaca

The kingdom of rats - not for the faint-hearted!

Visit the large attraction for the younger visitors to Augusta Raurica: the subterranean accessible wastewater tunnel, which once served as a sewer for the central baths! Almost 100 metres of the narrow wastewater tunnel dating from 1900 years ago and located 4 m below today's surface, are completely preserved and accessible!

The cloaca was a wastewater channel, in which one could just about stand upright and which led from the central baths to the Violenbach stream.

The supply shafts are still clearly visible and show that wastewater from private homes, roofs and backyards located left and right of the road to the Violenbach also fed into the cloaca.
