Section of a water conduit

A masterpiece of ancient engineering

Over a distance of 6.5 km and with a gradient of just 0.2 per cent, the Roman aqueduct leads across the right side of the Ergolz Valley from Lausen to Augst. It supplied the town with 1,000 cubic metres of drinking water per hour!

Today in Augusta Raurica:

Recovery in 1957 in Lausen-"Heidenloch":

The section of the Roman water conduit which ran from Lausen/Liestal to Augst provides a detailed insight into the complex construction of such aqueducts. The imprints of boards from the scaffolding can still be seen on the inside of the arched masonry and the water channel itself was coated in a thick layer of a special mortar mixture containing finely crushed roof tiles, making it perfectly watertight.

You can also view a restored section of a water conduit in its original findspot (approximately 15 minutes south of the town centre of Augusta Raurica, in Pratteln-"Wölferhölzli") and other sections in Lausen and Liestal.
