| Grienmatt sanctuary | |
| Celtic and Roman gods Here, on a valley floor not far from the town centre, stands what is probably the most unusual and most interesting but also the most mysterious temple complex of Augusta Raurica. It seems likely today that this was either a Gallo-Roman double temple or a water sanctuary. |

| Several finds provide evidence not only for the veneration of Aesculapius, the god of healing, and his father Apollo, but also of Hercules, Sucellus and the gods of the seven
days of the week. A remnant of the central temple building is the only part of the Grienmatt sanctuary still preserved today. However, test trenches and aerial photography have
shown that this central building once stood at the centre of a massive square surrounded by columns, which must have made a huge impression on pilgrims and visitors alike. Practically no excavations have taken place here since Aubert Parent carried out his research around 1800, which means that we still cannot provide a very clear picture of the original appearance of the sanctuary. | ||
