Suburban quarter in 'Kurzenbettli': what is still visible today - and the information we have on it
In the location where a pottery workshop had once stood at the beginning of the 1st century, a large complex of buildings was erected around AD 100 and continuously expanded
over a number of subsequent generations. A large courtyard or garden surrounded by columns was the centre of an extensive development. Numerous people lived, worked and
traded here. A quick lunch was available in the tavern, and just around the corner from it was where smoked hams and sausages were produced. The garden may have been
used to keep small animals and for the cultivation of special plants. The site is a good example of a Roman suburban quarter, used for many purposes; today, it would be called
a mixed use area. |
