Funerary monument

Monument(al)!

Not far from the east gate, outside the town wall, you will see impressive cylinder-shaped foundation walls. In the late 1st century AD, soon after commencement of the construction of the town wall a monumental burial was created here. The building was modelled on Mediterranean examples and erected for a high-ranking official of the town directly on top of the cremation site.

The massive cylinder-shaped building was the gravesite of the richest inhabitant of Augusta Raurica identified in the archaeological record to date. The rotunda measures 15 m in diameter and once stood at a height of 4-8 m. One may assume that it was covered by a mound with a sculpture on its highest point. The monumental nature of the funerary construction, together with the rich burial goods - e.g. several amphorae with wine and kilograms of grain - remain unique so far among the hundreds of known graves in Augusta Raurica!
