Today:

In Roman times:

The Roman animal bones found in the excavations provide us with knowledge about ancient domestic animal species. Here in the animal park we have old species on show, some of which are threatened by extinction today. You can admire Woolly Pigs, small cattle, Nera Verzasca Goats, Grisons Sheep, Italian chickens and guinea fowl, peacocks, geese and large donkeys. Unfortunately, we are unable to keep horses at this time.

The Roman domestic animal park was instigated in 1992 with the aim of illustrating to the public the research carried out on the Roman animal bones found in Augusta Raurica. Decades of analysing hundreds of thousands of pieces of food waste from Augusta Raurica has provided us with the detailed knowledge we have today on animal husbandry, slaughter techniques and nutritional habits of the rich and poor. Ancient species similar to what we expect them to have looked like in Roman times based on ancient depictions and on our own research can be seen in the small animal park.
