| A 3.9 m high Roman column has stood in the middle of the village of Augst for generations. Its sections probably came to light as early as the 19th century in the Grienmatt
temple district. The column is of the fluted type with Corinthian capital and is typical of the construction programme, which renewed the entire urban infrastructure between AD
40 and AD 70. Today, the original is stored in a depot in order to protect it from damage due to environmental conditions, and has been replaced by a replica in artificial stone. |
