Augmented reality, family experiences at the animal park and drop-in activities: in 2026, you’ll be able to explore Augusta Raurica with more flexibility than ever before. From summer onwards, new activities will be available to you – with no booking required and no fixed start times.

On a mission in the theatre with your mobile
This summer, you can experience augmented reality in the theatre: together with the Roman architect Lucius Varus, you’ll discover the 2nd-century AD renovation.
360° views and interactive games show you how the theatre used to function and what challenges the renovation work entailed.

Teamwork in the animal park
This summer at the animal park, you and your companion will step into the shoes of a Roman official’s family who have just moved to the area. Through various tasks, you’ll explore your new home and learn in a fun way which animals were kept in Roman times and why.

Get creative yourself
In our new Drop-ins, you can try out Roman craft techniques – from striking fire and making jewellery to dyeing fabrics. Or you can train with gladiators and immerse yourself in their world.

Exercise on the gladiator trail
The newly designed gladiator trail becomes an adventure course for young and old alike. On your way from the town centre to the amphitheatre, you’ll learn fascinating facts about the training, fights and daily life of gladiators.

Culture and events at the theatre
In summer, the Augusta Raurica Theatre becomes an open-air stage: look forward to the Z7 ‘Live in Concert’ series featuring acts such as Crazy Diamond, Apocalyptica, Eluveitie and Mono Inc. With ‘Apollon’, the Basel-based club Nordstern brings electronic music and visual art to an ancient setting. In July, the ‘Reconnect’ programme offers insights into current art projects at the historic Castelen estate. At the end of August, Switzerland’s biggest Roman festival awaits you.
