Augmented reality experience at the Augusta Raurica Theatre

Discover the Augusta Raurica Theatre through stunning augmented reality visualisations and a game. Join architect Lucius Optimus Mensor on his mission – and play your own part in history.

Lucius Optimus Mensor has been assigned an important task: conversion of one of the biggest buildings in the region. He needs to choose the right materials, decide on the structure of the building, plan the foundations and layout, and make sure the new playhouse draws in spectators. Work with him step by step to make the right decisions to make the theatre a reality!

All the scenes shown are based on real archaeological finds and historical knowledge. Lucius Optimus Mensor is a fictional figure.

Please note:

Architectus is a new app and, whilst it is in the testing phase, it is only available in German. Thank you for your understanding.

How it works:

1. Visit the theatre
Make your way to the Roman theatre at Augusta Raurica.

2. Start at any station
The stations are marked with “Architectus” and located around the theatre.

3. Scan the QR code and start the mission!
Have your smartphone or tablet at the ready, scan the QR codes and get started.

Duration: approx. 30–45 min.
The activity can be started from any of the stations.
You will need internet access, as the activity is provided via a web app.
The activity is only designed to work on site.
The locations of the stations are shown in the web app.
To use the augmented reality feature, you must allow the browser to access your camera.
We recommend headphones for the best experience.

The activity is primarily a visual experience based on digital reconstructions and games provided through the web app. Some spoken text (subtitled) is provided alongside the visual content.

Impaired mobility

Four of the six stations can be accessed using paved or partially paved routes, with short slopes with gradients >6% (1:17). One station (side entrance) has restricted access. At the end of the game, a bonus station is unlocked, which is difficult to reach by wheelchair (steep gradients of 12% (1:8) and unpaved grass). Go to Accessible > Reduced mobility to see the map for people with reduced mobility.
Impairment due to age

There are places to sit available at some of the stations.
Learning disability

There is a lot of information provided in this activity. The information is displayed through a web app with images and games. There is text to read. At some points there are spoken explanations with subtitles.
