50th anniversary

2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Roman Treaty. The parties to the treaty will celebrate this historic date with a joint ceremony in Augusta Raurica.

‘Fifty years ago, the cantons of Basel-Landschaft, Aargau and Basel-Stadt, together with the Pro Augusta Raurica Foundation and the Historical and Antiquarian Society of Basel, decided to take responsibility for a unique cultural heritage: the Roman city of Augusta Raurica.’ This is how Monica Gschwind, Executive Councillor of the Canton of Basel-Landschaft, opened the anniversary celebrations. Martina Bircher, Executive Councillor of the canton of Aargau, emphasised the importance of the joint development of Augusta Raurica, particularly with regard to the preservation, research and communication of the Roman town. Dr Conradin Cramer, President of the Government of the canton of Basel-Stadt, underlined the uniqueness of the treaty and its significance for the diverse relationships that shape our cultural, scientific and social life today. Finally, BAK Director Carine Bachmann expressed her appreciation to the politicians who, 50 years ago, with great foresight and courage, paved the way for a cultural heritage of national interest.

To mark the anniversary, the treaty was revised, signed by all parties and thus reaffirmed their continued commitment to the future of Augusta Raurica.
