Archaeology Day

Experience modern archaeology at three different locations.

Sunday, June 15, 10:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Location: Museum, Collection Center, and Kaiseraugst

On Archaeology Day, we are offering three exciting opportunities to learn about current projects.

Rescue archaeology: History under our Feet
The current district heating development of the historic village center of Kaiseraugst is being monitored archaeologically. This is how we secure finds and insights into Augusta Raurica and the castrum rauracense.
Come and visit us! Learn more about rescue archaeology and its significance, get to know how we work, marvel at fascinating and curious finds, and take a look into the past that helps shape our future.

Meeting point: at the intersection of Heidemurweg and Kastellstrasse in 4303 Kaiseraugst.
Drop-in: 11 am–4 pm (no registration required).

From the Roman estate in Hölstein (BL) to the Roman House in Augst
Seventy years ago, an original Roman mosaic was laid in the dining room of the Roman House. It originally came from the bathhouse of the Roman estate in Hölstein and is almost 2000 years old. It was discovered by pure chance in 1947 during the search for a water source and then excavated, recovered in two parts and brought to Augst. The mosaic, which has since become damaged, is currently being re-conserved. We invite you to take a look at the ongoing restoration work, ask questions and learn more about the history of this fascinating find.

Meeting point: Museum Augusta Raurica
Drop-in: 10.30–16.00 (no registration necessary)
Guided tour: 14.00–14.45, registration
