Imminent danger! The preservation of the Roman curia at Augst

This year’s European Heritage Days are taking place under the theme ‘At Risk?’. They highlight the dangers threatening our cultural heritage – including in Switzerland. At the same time, they offer an opportunity to find solutions together and to explore new ways of preserving our rich heritage.
During the European Heritage Days, Augusta Raurica is offering a glimpse into the restoration work being carried out on the Roman Curia. Participation in the guided tours is free of charge.
The Curia, situated on the Forum, is one of the buildings at Augusta Raurica that is still visible today. Following the first major excavations at the start of the 20th century, the building was fully excavated and subsequently restored in the 1960s. The basement discovered at that time was covered with a reinforced concrete structure. Today, this concrete slab, which is around 65 years old, is showing its age. Water ingress has caused corrosion damage, and the concrete slab no longer complies with current safety standards. Demolition is unavoidable, but how can such a massive restoration intervention be removed without endangering the original Roman walls? What measures are necessary to preserve this unusual structure for future generations?
