Castelen Estate garden guided tour
Take advantage of this exclusive opportunity to explore the private gardens of the historic Castelen Estate.
The Castelen country house towers high above the ancient Roman town of Augusta Raurica. The villa with gardens, which was constructed in several phases between 1918 and 1932, was a summer home of the Basel chemist, Dr René Clavel-Simonius.
Landscape architect Thomas Stauffer will guide you through the spectacular gardens, which are divided into two sections: a landscape garden and a smaller architectural garden. On the tour, you will learn how the care for the historic garden has been informed by considerations of landscape architecture and garden monument protection since 2010. You'll also enjoy stunning views of the Rhine valley and the Roman city of Augusta Raurica.
The gardens are included in Switzerland's List of Historic Gardens and Sites (International Council on Monuments and Sites – ICOMOS).
