Metal detectors

Picking up or digging up archaeological finds is punishable by law.

Archaeological finds belong to the state - regardless of the ownership of the land on which they were found. Roman finds from the area of Augusta Raurica (Augst BL and Kaiseraugst AG) must be handed in to the Roman Museum. Searching fields, farmland, meadows and forests with or without metal detectors is a criminal offence and is punishable by a fine of up to CHF 100,000.

Looting destroys the archaeological context. As a result, knowledge about life in antiquity is irretrievably lost and can no longer be made accessible to the general public.

In addition to the cultural damage, looting also destroys the work of our farmers. Please help to prevent such destruction.

Any observations can be reported directly to the cantonal police (phone 112).

Thank you for your attention.
