Nearly 80 years ago, while searching for a water source, a farmer in Hölstein (BL) accidentally discovered a Roman villa rustica. In 1947, the bathhouse of this estate was archaeologically investigated. During the excavation, an exceptionally well-preserved, colourful mosaic floor was uncovered and documented in the cold bath. The mosaic was then lifted in two parts and transported by horse-drawn wagon to Augst. There, it was restored and, a few years later, laid in the dining room of the Roman House. Since then, it has helped give both adults and children an impression of Roman life.

Conserved 78 years ago according to the restoration practices of the time, the mosaic today shows various types of damage. These are partly due to the way the mosaic was set in a metal frame, which has corroded over time and caused deterioration.

After a detailed assessment of the current condition and damage, restoration work is now underway. The corrosion of the metal frame has already been removed. Our restorer is currently testing different recipes for the restoration mortars. She is preparing sample mixtures of lime mortar, modified with pigments and different sands, to achieve a variety of colours and textures. These mortars will be used to fill damaged joints, to fix loose mosaic tesserae, and to reconnect the mosaic floor to the adjacent sandstone thresholds.

You can get a look behind the scenes of this work on Archaeology Day – Sunday, 15 June.
